Political Paunch

In the aftermath of Chris Christie’s revelation on Tuesday that he had lap-band surgery for weight loss three months ago, the entire New York Times front-page summary for the New York/Region section this morning features weight loss stories. The second article, “The Personal and the Political on a Candidate’s Diet,” features the public weight-loss and -gain stories of several politicians, including before-and-after photos. It seems odd that no articles mention Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity campaign; the omission creates a sense that weight has no other relation to politics aside from the ability to run or hold office.
